Join me in my efforts to support the Connecticut Challenge!
Dear Friends:
Over the past several years I hae written to you and shared my journey through cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care. It has always been my hope that my story would make the journey easier for at least one cancer survivor and will reassure them that they too could overcome this desease and reach their desination.
I have written about the need for the Cancer Survivors Clinic, the reasons I believe so much in the clinic and have asked for your support. As always, you were there with generous financal support as well as friendship, compassion and encouragement.
As 2009 has progressed, I have been faced with challenges and victories. I am encouraged by my doctor's reports as well as strenthened by their commitment and dedication. The challenges were met with solutions, which while not always perfect, certainly are easier to adjust to because of the support I recieve from my friends and the folks at the Connecticut Challenge.
This has been a very exciting year for the Connecticut Challenge. I want to share with you in the following paragraphs what your generousity has enabled us to accomplish. I want to share with you the strides we have made because of your friendship, partnership and continued support.
We are still operating the Connecticut Challenge Survivor's Clinic at Yale, our first giant step and the first clinic of its kind in the state. The clinic at Yale remains committed to providing oncological; nutritional, physical therapy and psycho-social support to cancer survivors, their familes and friends when the clinical part of the cancer treatment is complete.
In February 2009, the Connecticut Challenge was able to make a donation to the Connecticut Childrens Medical Center "REACH for the STARS" Program (REACH: Reseach, Education, Advocacy, Continued life and Helth; STARS: Survivors Tackling All Roadblocks Successfully). The program is designed to help pediatric cancer survivors improve and maintain a high quality and successful lifestyle.
In April 2009, the Connecticut Challenge was able to make a grant to Stamford Hospital's Carl & Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center. The grant will support "Transitions: Choices In Recovery", a post treatment survivorship program for patients and their families. The grant will also assist in funding the "Moving On" program, a special aspect of "Transitions" designed for patients 40 and younger who often face a variety of unique issues following cancer diagnosis and treatment. The "Transitions" program is the first of its kind in Fairfield County.
In May 2009, the Connecticut Challenge became the "Connecticut Challenge Survivorship Network". This change was made in recognition of the fact that the Connectcut Challenge was expanding its involvement to include not only Yale and the New Haven area but providing support at more hosiptals with the goal of having a survivorship clinic at every hospital in the state. Jeff Keith, a cancer survivor and founder of the Connecticut Challenge said "We realize that more programs are needed all across the state to reach survivors where they live. The goal of the Connecticut Challenge Network is ensuring that cancer survivors know where to turn for help with their survivorship challenges".
On May 11, 2009, the Yale Cancer Center, the Connecticut Cancer Partnership and the Connecticut Challenge sponsored a symposium, attended by representatives of mamy hospitals entitled "Creating and Outstanding Cancer Survivorship Program".
This has all been accomplished by the generous support of friends like you. The annual Connecticut Challenge ride, our signature fundraiser, is taking place on July 25. This is our 5th Anversary Ride and as we said in our "Better Connecticut" segment our goal is to raise enought money to continue supporting our existing programs and continue to expand. I want to be part of that goal and I ask for your help and support.
Please join me in supporting the Connecticut Challenge Network and help provide important resources for cancer survivors, like me, throughout the state. It has been through our grass roots effort that we have been able to achieve so much - and there is still so much left to do.
I will always be greateful to everyone who has supported me during my illness, my treatment, my survivorship, my complications and my fundraising efforts. Please join me again in supporting this important resource.
Each day I keep each of you in my thoughts and prayers. A day doesn't go by that I am not greatful for all you make possible.
Best regards to all,
Mike
